Winners All Round

We are delighted to announce the winner of our 2014 Edinburgh College of Art Book Cover competition is Sara Ljeskovac and her beautifully depicted eagle. It will be the cover for Alan Brown’s soon-to-be released eBook ‘Boy Soldier and Beyond’. When we set the brief for the students, we knew it would be challenging for them, given the topic of the book and the fact this year’s cover was specifically chosen as an eBook-only option. We were thrilled to see how the students rose to the challenge and produced some amazing covers which would look stunning on both a printed sleeve and as a small thumbnail in your favourite eBook store.

The judging was as difficult as ever, with several debates about the merits of each title being weighed up against our expectations and requirements, before drawing up a shortlist of 5 to make a final choice on. The 5 shortlisted entrants were Felix Miall, Amy Wedge, Maria Rikteryte, Kirsty Beautiman and Sara Ljeskovac. Out of all the submissions, we believed that these were images that answered the brief most strongly. After that we swung one way or another before deciding upon Sara’s entry. We would like to say a massive thank you to all the students who entered. This is our 4th year of working with the Edinburgh College of Art in running the Book Cover competition and we feel it goes from strength to strength every year. It is a joy to see how the students interpret what we give them and it is always astonishing to see such high standards and variety in their submissions. You can see all the winners on our Pinterest page or in this post. Fledgling Press cannot wait to do it all again next year! In the meantime keep your eyes peeled for the eBook ‘Boy Soldier and Beyond’.
