ECA 2015

We were delighted to be working with the students at the Edinburgh College of Art again for this years book cover competition. This is the fifth time we have challenged the students to create a book cover for one of our titles, every year they do not disappoint and this year was no exception.

The title for this years competition is Names of the Dead by Mark Leggatt, due to be released on 27 July 2015. The book is a thriller based upon real events, wrapped up in fictional characters and locations, readers may wish to research further into the history around some of the theories and conspiracies. The pursuit of power across the globe, the reasons for military intervention and wars, and the absence of morality in these actions, drive Western countries to extraordinary lengths, with no regard to human suffering. The book was a most challenging title for the students, who seemed to relish the challenge.

After briefing the students in January, Clare from Fledgling Press and Mark Leggatt were delighted to return two weeks later to see the results. Having upped the ante this year by requesting the full cover be designed, with a fairly strict criteria and definite direction, ECA can be proud that all the students were able to answer the brief with such style and confidence.

As you can see from the gallery above, the standard was exceptionally high again and we were very pleased with the tough decision the students had given us to make.

From the entries above, we had to whittle down a shortlist of five, and having had change to mull it over and receive some much appreciated feedback from some of our friends at DC Thomson, we have a shortlist of 5 who are listed below.

  • Thomas Shek
  • Grace Pow
  • Ann Macleod
  • Gabriel Hernandez
  • Elle McKee

There were elements in each of these which we thought were brilliant, and each of them could easily be on the book cover come July. However, we have to make a decision based on a number of criteria so that will be made and announced very shortly.

For now, a huge thank you to the students (and staff) at the Edinburgh College of Art for welcoming Fledgling Press back, working so hard on their entries and for being brilliant once again. We will announce the winner shortly, and hopefully be back with another competition soon!
