A belated April update from the team at Fledgling Press as we’ve had a remarkably busy start to the month. As an independent publisher, it seems publishing books is very similar to buses – nothing for a while and then they all come at once! And throw staff holidays and the London Book Fair into the mix and you’ve got a belated blog post.Back in March we ran our ECA Book Cover Competition which we thoroughly enjoyed and hope the students at the Edinburgh College of Art did too. The competition was to illustrate the cover for Dickson Telfer’s upcoming novel, The Red Man Turns to Green. The winner was Rachel Cartwright who’s entry has been edited by our graphic designer and turned into the cover below! We’re very pleased with the results and hope you like it too – we appreciate any feedback! We’re also delighted to have a publication date for Winchman by Chris Murray, which will be published on 31 May. This is another dip into non-fiction for Fledgling Press, with an exciting biography of an ex-winchman on board Search and Rescue helicopters in northern Scotland. He details some of their harrowing rescues, as well as receiving the Queen’s Gallentry Medal in 2005 at Buckingham Palace. Through the book there are also 32 pages of full colour photos which depict some of the stories within. We had a great time at the London Book Fair, meeting everybody there and soaking up the atmosphere as well as attending some key talks and lectures from industry bodies. We’re taking the time to reflect on what was said and plan how we can implement some of these ideas in the future – so watch this space!
