"Selkirk of the Fethan" by Malcolm Archibald

£7.99

ISBN: ISBN 0954412133

"Selkirk of the Fethan" by Malcolm Archibald is the final novel in his trilogy about a Scots Border lad going off to the Boer War.  This volume starts with his irregular horse group of Reivers manning a blockhouse, part of the strategy that eventually ground down the Boers, before being sent on a mission to intercept an intrusion by a foreign power.  They are also involved in rescuing Boer friends from a concentration camp, and running against a wild bandit group, before the war ends and they return home.  The adventures and surprises continue, but it would spoil the plot if I told you too much.

Malcolm Archibald combines the expertise of a first-rate historian with the story-telling skills to make history come alive, in the long tradition of eminent Scottish writers. Scott, Stevenson and Buchan spring to mind, though Malcolm had a delayed start.  In 2005 he won the Dundee Book Prize for "Whales for the Wizard", published by Polygon: the decision was partly decided by the votes of book-reading groups.
